LAST MOMENTS PHOTOGRAPHY

An important and precious last memory

Every life is finite, but love remains and so do memories of that love. As a family and funeral photographer, I can support you and your loved ones through the process of saying goodbye with beautiful photographs of the love and support in the final stages of someone's life and at your loved one's funeral.

Last Moments Photography

During this photo session you get together one more time with the person you will soon have to say goodbye to and enjoy each other’s company intensely. A photo session in which there is often lots of laughter, but in which there’s also space for all kinds of other emotions. A Last Moment photo session can be very supportive in the process of saying goodbye, because your love for one another and connection with each other are captured in a beautiful and pure way. The photos and your family story will provide comfort and support when your loved one is no longer here. How we are going to plan out this session depends entirely on the wishes of you and your loved ones. We can create a beautiful memory at home, or in a favorite location. As long as you can relax and enjoy your togetherness.

Funeral Photography

After your loved one passes away, you often find yourself in a rush where you want to organize the most beautiful farewell possible that suits the memory of your loved one. During the funeral itself you keep an eye on the organization in addition to giving yourself room to say goodbye. It is an emotionally demanding day that often passes in a kind of haze. Funeral photography captures that important day for you in an emotional and loving way. So that after the farewell you can look back on the beautiful ceremony in which your loved one was honoured. As a funeral photographer, I photograph the entire ceremony and I also focus on the small, but very important gestures of love and connection. This way you’ll receive a tangible memory that can support you in your mourning process and in which the love for the deceased is evident.

Due to the sensitivity of Last Moment photo sessions, I cannot show many photos on this web page. Do you want to get to know my style of photography? Then please check out the family photography page on this website.

About Me

Let's start with the fact that I am the mother of the most stubborn 7-year-old living on this planet. But even so, I love him and he is my muse. I am a co-parent and enjoy life together with my son in my apartment in the center of Haarlem, The Netherlands. My son is the reason I became a professional photographer: two years after I started photographing him in documentary style and posting his photos on Instagram, I got booked as an (international) family photographer and mentor in the same field.

My father is the one who introduced me to photography at a young age, back then we were still developing our own rolls of film. I always saw photography as a hobby and when I graduated from Art School I was an illustrator and sculptor for 6 years before I fell in love with photography again. And thank god for that, because it turned out to be the greatest passion in my life. And with that same passion, I now create the most beautiful memories for other families, in all stages of life and of all types of life events.

Real emotions, real stories

Documentary photography emphasises on telling a story in a photograph or in a series of images. This means that I capture life without influencing it. In this way, human stories are told at their purest and in their most emotional way. The advantage of a documentary photo session is that nothing is expected of you. You don't have to pose; you can fully focus on spending the day with your loved ones. Leave it to me to capture your togetherness in a relaxed, memorable and beautiful way. Of course, should it be desired, we can take the time to take portraits.

Collaboration with Heemvaert Funerals

For the Last Moments photography sessions, I work closely with Marsha Brink of Heemvaert Funerals. We decided to work together after I photographed a Last Moment photo session on the beach with her mother who was terminally ill. This lasting memory turned out to be very important to her and her family. Marsha started Heemvaert Funerals out of her own experience and her drive to make the world a little more beautiful. Are you still looking for an involved and knowledgeable funeral director? Then you can find more information here.

FAQ

These sessions are prioritised in my calendar and in close contact with all involved we will discuss what is possible. You can reach me via the buttons on this page, but you can also call me at 06-14119298 or email me at info@nienkekoedijk.com. I always respond within 24 hours and oftentimes a lot quicker.

During a Last Moment photo session, we’ll take into account what your loved one can still handle at that moment. And what his or her wishes are. We can meet at a favorite location (like the beach, a vacation home, etc.) or just stay at home. I’ll leave that up to you. After we set a date, I will introduce myself to everyone before the photo session (via Zoom or a video) so that everyone is at ease during the day of the photo session itself. And I will make sure on the day of the photo session that there’s no pressure on you and your loved ones, it’ll be a calm and loving photo session. The session is photographed in a documentary manner, which means that there is no directing and the farewell is captured in a natural and loving way.

You have a lot on your mind when you are organising the funeral of your loved one. Therefore, I will try to keep our contact moments to a minimum. Prior to the farewell photo session, I will contact you and the funeral director to discuss the day. That way I know exactly where I need to be at what time and what your wishes and those of your loved ones are. On the day itself, I will be as minimally noticeably present as possible so that you can concentrate on the farewell. The photo session is photographed in a documentary manner, which means that there is no directing and that the farewell is captured in a natural and loving way. After the funeral, I will not contact you until the photos are finished. So that you can have as much peace of mind as possible in the difficult period after the farewell of your loved one.

During Last Moments photo sessions, I will temporarily become a part of your family, but keep my distance when the situation calls for it. Because of my years of experience, I know exactly how to act during an emotional photo shoot. I am often told afterwards that at one point people did not even realize a photographer was present.

During a Farewell photo session of your loved one, I will be as humble and quiet as possible. Before the farewell takes place, we will discuss your wishes in terms of photographs of the farewell. This way I will know exactly where to position myself at the location(s) so that my presence remains as unnoticed as possible. Of course it is impossible not to be noticed at all, but I know from experience that my presence is never perceived as disturbing.

During Last Moment photo sessions, I almost never use a flash because I do not want to disturb the togetherness and atmosphere with my presence. But if you, for example, want me to photograph a portrait and I feel I need to use flash for that, I will always ask first. If the answer is ‘no’ then I will find another solution. Your wishes always come first.

During a Farewell photo session I never use a flash because it is too disturbing for the ceremony. I have a very light-sensitive professional camera that can still make beautiful images in very poorly lit conditions, so I can guarantee you will get beautiful photos in any situation.

Post-processing a photo session takes time, but I will prioritize your session over other photo sessions. For both Last Moment and Farewell photo sessions, you can expect the slideshow in about a month. Once all photos are approved by you, I will order the album. This album will be printed in a professional photo lab outside of the Netherlands and will be delivered to my home within two weeks. Once I have received and checked the album, I will send it to you within a week.

If you would like to receive the photos sooner, that can be scheduled and arranged after consultation.
